Child Development Admissions

The Child Development Program accepts students with a bachelor's degree in human development or related fields. Students may transfer graduate credits if the courses are relevant to the master's program of study. Each case will be reviewed on an individual basis. Applications and all supporting materials must be received by March 1st to be considered for fall admission. Applicants are admitted to the fall quarter only. This summer, we expect an interruption in the online application process. If you plan on submitting an application to the MACD program during June or July, please email Dr. Ward ( before applying.

The following pre-requisites should be met prior to admittance.

  1. A course in introductory psychology
  2. A course in introductory psychological statistics (an upper division course is strongly recommended)
  3. A lower division course in child development
  4. A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0


In addition to completing the University Application, students must also complete a program application for Child Development. Department applications should be mailed in or submitted in person to the following address:

Application Materials

  1. A copy of your university application for graduate admission.
    After submitting your application online, you will be given a confirmation receipt; please print this page and include it in your application as proof of applying to the university.

  2. A copy of (unofficial) transcripts from each college and university you have attended, regardless of whether you received a degree.

  4. Statement of Purpose

    A 1-2 page typewritten description of a) the career and specific professional activities you wish to pursue following receipt of the Master's Degree in Child Development, b) the type of training you hope to receive in our program, c) the reasons why you have chosen our program as opposed to other psychology and education programs, and d) your qualifications for graduate study (e.g., academic accomplishments, research experience, practical or applied experience). The statement used for the University Application is not sufficient!

    Three (3) Letters of Recommendation

    At least two letters should come from faculty instructors who know the quality of your academic work and can make relevant comments on your likely success in a graduate program.

    Letters must be sent directly from the recommender or received in a sealed envelope with the recommender’s signature over the seal.

*Note: Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores are NOT REQUIRED when applying to psychology graduate programs, but may be included to enhance your application, particularly for non-psychology majors.
