Research and Teaching Interests:
Recent research in my laboratory has revolved around four topic areas. First, I have a long-term interest in the ontogeny of basal ganglia functioning especially as it relates to unlearned motor movement. Most of this research has focused on interactions between the kappa-opioid and dopamine systems. Second, for the past ten years my laboratory has examined the ontogeny of psychostimulant-induced behavioral sensitization. Initially, my interests focused on the neural substrates (e.g., dopamine and NMDA) underlying sensitization, but more recently we have been examining Pavlovian processes important for behavioral sensitization. Third, in collaboration with Dr. Crawford we have been examining whether various psychostimulants (amphetamine, methamphetamine and MDMA) and heavy metals (manganese) cause long-term behavioral and neural deficits. Fourth, we have been examining both the neuropharmacology and behavioral impact of dopamine partial agonist drugs. Dopamine partial agonists are a class of drugs that are used for the treatment of drug addiction, Parkinson's disease, and various psychiatric conditions.
